The Modest Needs Mission

Modest Needs is a non-profit organization who's mission is to:

To responsibly provide short-term financial assistance to individuals and families in temporary crisis who, because they are working and live just above the poverty level, are ineligible for most types of conventional social assistance but who (like many of us) are living one or two lost paychecks away from the kind of financial catastrophe that eventually leads to homelessness;
To lessen the burden of state and federal agencies charged with the care of the truly indigent by doing everything in our power to stop these at-risk households from slipping into the cycle of poverty, despite the burden posed by an unanticipated, emergency expense; and
To promote compassion and generosity on the part of individual persons living in the United States and Canada, the areas that we serve, by standing as a living testament to the power of human kindness to change lives, no matter how much (or how little) a person has to share.

How to Apply For Modest Needs Grants

At Modest Needs, we all know from experience how hard it is to ask for help, even when you really need it. We're happy that you've found us, and we'll do everything we can to find a way to help you. If you're brand new to Modest Needs and would like to apply for a grant, just follow the three simple steps below.

Step 1: Read the Frequently Asked Questions for Applicants

We know that, sometimes, applying for help can be confusing. To make this process simpler, we've written a 'Frequently Asked Questions' page just for applicants. This page will tell you everything you need to know about how Modest Needs works, from the kinds of grants we can and can't make to detailed information about our application process.

Step 2: Register with Modest Needs

(If you've already registered with Modest Needs, please skip to Step 3, below.)

Because we do all of our work online, you'll need to register with Modest Needs before you apply for help. During the application process, we'll be communicating with you primarily through your Modest Needs account.

Registering with Modest Needs is free, quick and easy. Just click the 'Register' link at the very top of this page and complete our simple registration process. Registering with us should take you less than five minutes.

IMPORTANT: You'll need an active email account in order to register with us. If you don't have an email account and need to create one so that you can register with Modest Needs, we highly recommend creating a Gmail Account.

As soon as you've registered with us, you're ready to apply for help. Please note that we allow only one active applicant account per household.

Step 3: Complete Our Online Grant Application

Once you've read our FAQ for applicants and registered with us, you're ready to apply for help.

To start your application, log in to your Modest Needs account and then click the button at the bottom of this page that says 'Apply for Help Now.' (If you see a button that says Register / Login, you're not logged into our system. Logging in will fix that problem!)

From there, you'll be redirected to our 'Apply for Help' page, where we'll give you a few final tips and a link to our online application.
