Shelter
Homeless families with two or more children of minor age(s) are eligible to request shelter acceptance for Mary's Place, our homeless shelter. We have 100 fully-furnished apartments. Families need to come for an in-person intake interview at Sharing and Caring Hands with all family members needing shelter - children and adult(s) must be present. Shelter requests are considered on an individual basis, depend on if there are vacancies, and are not automatically granted.
Shelter Intakes are done Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00am. We encourage early arrival as there is often a line for shelter intake.
Meals
Hot meals are served in our cafeteria Monday - Thursday at 10:00am & 1:00pm; Saturday and Sunday at 10:00am; no meals are served on Fridays.
Food Shelf
Bags of food with boxed and canned pantry items are available Monday - Thursday at 10:00am OR 12noon.

Dental services are available on a first-come, first-serve basis whenever a volunteer dentist is available. We currently only provide extractions. The Dental Clinic is located in the lower level of Sharing and Caring Hands. When you walk into the main entrance, walk up the ramp, and down the stairs. The Dental Clinic is at the bottom of the stairs. Services are completely free and are provided for those who are uninsured or under-insured and unable to pay for dental care.
Eyeglasses Program
Vouchers for eye exams and eyeglasses to a local eyecare center are available for uninsured or under-insured adults Monday - Thursday at 10:00am OR 12noon.
We also have vouchers for students ages 6+ through high school age. Students can be referred by their school. Ideally, we would like the referral to come from the school's nurse. The school nurse should first make sure 1) the student does not have health insurance, or 2) the student's health insurance will not cover their eye exam and eyeglasses. The school's nurse can request the voucher by emailing glasses@sharingandcaringhands.org with an official/valid school email address. We cannot accept referrals and requests from government or personal email accounts. If it is your first time emailing in, your email should include your name, your school's name, your job position/title, a website link to where you are listed on the school's website (if you are not on the school's website, then please indicate this, and cc your school's administration on your email to us so we know they see your request), the student's first and last name, their date of birth, if age 18+ but still a student at your school then we also need their grade level, and if they need a voucher for eye exam, eyeglasses, or both. Because we are short-staffed, it may take 1 week for a reply, especially for brand new referrals. This email address is strictly for schools to request vouchers for students - any other email inquiry will not be responded to.
Beds
We pay for and deliver beds for those who recently moved into an apartment/home within the last 30 days. Beds are full or twin size and brand new. We will order 1 bed per individual OR 2 beds for families. We deliver to locations in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and many surrounding suburbs. We are still able to order and pay for beds for those not living within our delivery areas as long as they can pick up and transport their own beds. Bed orders are done every Monday promptly at 10:00am. You must bring your lease and picture ID. Bed orders are done on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Other Available Essential Needs
The following essential needs can also be provided but depend upon availability and individual determination by director, Mary Jo. If you need help with the following or have any other service request, you must come in-person Monday - Thursday at 10:00am OR 12noon.

Families are given their own private apartment with bedroom space, kitchen space, bathroom, basic furniture items like couch/table/chairs/shelving units, phone, and television with cable. There are 2 sizes of apartments. The smaller apartments can accommodate 3-5 people and the larger apartments can accommodate 5-12 people. All together, we can house more than 600 people in need at any given time. Every effort has been made to ensure the safety and security of the residents by having a locked front door, entry by ID card only, security cameras, and a front desk lobby that is staffed 24/7. Rules and guidelines are in place to ensure a family-friendly, peaceful, and productive environment. On the main floor, residents have access to a free/large laundry facility, computer resource room with internet, chapel, medical clinic, meeting spaces, classrooms where their children can access tutoring services, and activity rooms. Mary's Place also has a large fenced in backyard with playground, basketball court, small soccer field, and picnic tables. The building and grounds are kept impressively and incredibly clean.
Mary’s Place has full-time Family Advocates that provide all of the families case management. They work different shifts to be available to the families morning, afternoon, and evening. Each family is given their own Family Advocate to work with during their stay so they have the guidance and support they need to work towards independence and self-sufficiency. The Family Advocates meet with the families to help with goal planning, budgeting skills, and referrals to community resources and services. The residents work toward securing daycare, finding a job if they do not already have one, saving their money, and finding housing that will be affordable and safe for their family.Homeless families with children are eligible to request shelter acceptance at Mary's Place. Families need to come for an in-person intake interview. All children needing shelter must be present.
