Individual and Family Therapy
Whether individual, couples, or group, psychotherapy provides the individual or family an opportunity to explore problems, visualize desired goals, and work on changes in ways of thinking, reacting, and behaving that will bring about the resolution of problems and allow comfort, growth, and meaningfulness in life.
In many cases, a person, couple, or family can obtain the help needed from a therapist in just a few visits; in other cases, additional sessions are required.
Psychotherapy can help with:
• Prolonged feelings of overwhelming helplessness and sadness
• Problems that don’t seem to get better despite your efforts and help from family and friends
• Difficulty concentrating on work assignments or carrying out other everyday activities
• Excessive worry, expecting the worst, and/or being constantly on edge
• Harmful thoughts and actions such as drinking too much alcohol, using drugs or being aggressive, that may cause harm to self or others
Adult & Child Psychiatry
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems. Because they are physicians, psychiatrists can order or perform a full range of medical laboratory and psychological tests which, combined with discussions with patients, help provide a picture of a patient’s physical and mental state.
Northern Pines provides psychiatric services to the individuals we serve, both children and adults. Our trained medical staff is there to assist clients in the medication management of their mental health symptoms to promote and enhance the individual’s quality of life and to improve daily living.
People may seek psychiatric help for many reasons, including:
• Frightening hallucinations
• Overwhelming sadness
• Debilitating anxiety
• Obsessions or compulsions
• Thoughts of suicide
• Panic attacks
• Feelings of persecution
• Difficulty with everyday functioning
• Inability to control emotions
• Hearing “voices”
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a therapy designed to help people suffering from mood disorders as well as those who exhibit patterns of behavior that are not helpful, such as self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse.
Goals of DBT include:
• Increasing emotion regulation skills (enhancing your ability to control your emotions). Decreasing fluctuating emotions and moods
• Increasing distress tolerance skills (learning to get through hard times without making things worse). Decreasing impulsiveness
• Increasing interpersonal effectiveness skills (getting what you want from relationships and improving relationships). Decreasing interpersonal chaos
