It is important to stay in good health by finding and treating problems early with regular health checkups.
Visiting with a Public Health Nurse assists moms and babies with staying healthy, helps children to be safe and prepared for school, and assist families with self-sufficiency.
Child and Teen Checkups
Infants should see their medical provider for preventive health care at least six times during their first year. Children should have an annual health check-up starting at the age of 3 through the age of 20 years.
Individuals who have Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare insurance are eligible for Child and Teen Checkups (C&TC) benefits to provide for preventive health care visits with their medical provider.
C&TC benefits include a complete physical exam, immunizations, hearing and vision checks, lab tests, growth measurements, developmental screening, dental varnishing application, and anticipatory guidance about physical and mental health needs.
St. Louis County Public Health professionals assist with finding medical and dental providers, transportation, and language interpretation. We provide participants with information about available programs, services, and rewards for compliance with health and dental C&TC visits.

Follow Along Program
The Follow Along Program (FAP) is an interagency effort to improve identification and service delivery for children birth to age three years (36 months) who may be at risk for health or developmental delays. Questionnaires are mailed throughout early childhood and ask how the child is growing, playing, talking, moving and acting.

Public Health sends age-appropriate, fun activities specific to the child’s developmental stages. If there are concerns, a Public Health Nurse contacts the parent/guardian to offer additional recommendations, refer the child to his/her health care provider, and/or refers the child to Help Me Grow for further developmental assessment. FAP provides the parent/guardian with information about community services upon request.
